I saw Beanie today, at work! She tends a bar. It's interesting, because she has a degree from Berkeley. It makes me wonder what kind of credentials you need to get a professional job outside the tech industry. A doctorate? A movie based on your work? The Nobel Prize? It is a little depressing to see the most educated member of my family in a job which does not employ her rarest skills. I guess not all education is pursued towards the end of getting money out of it. Certainly, most liberal arts majors can't hope to be famous poets or painters, or whatever else "liberal arts" consists of. Well, Bean passed her LSAT with a reasonably good score, so her next objective is to go to law school to be an attorney. So that's just around the corner.

Oh yeah, zero more shopping days until christmas. If you haven't bought your loved ones expensive and trendy gifts by now, you're officially a bad person.

The more I consider it, the more it seems like the only way to redeem the gift giving aspect of christmas is to make every gift yourself. Otherwise, it seems so crass that you go out to a store and buy a thing and then give it to someone as some kind of symbol of... what? Generosity? Good will? Love? Thoughtfulness? How thoughtful is it to buy someone a gift because your society says you should buy them a gift now?
